Jarboe and Other Things
Get excited. You’re about to get to know another one of our beloved Palace baristas! That’s right, it’s been a while since we we’ve featured a barista, and who better than the one and only Ryan Jarboe? You can find Jarboe behind our Amarillo bar looking fresh as always and working a mean beard. He is a master at cappuccinos and can also serve you a killer cocktail in his free time if you’re lucky. He is a connoisseur on all things classy and loves a good conversation about books or movies. This guy is a true gem of a man and we are incredibly fortunate to have him! Everyone, meet Jarboe.
Ryan Douglas Jarboe is my full name, but I go by Jarboe.
I was born in Mexico City, Mexico and raised in Lubbock, TX.
What are you studying and why?
I studied philosophy at Texas Tech. I'm drawn to philosophy because of the analytical thinking and reasoning it requires. The thinking tools I've learned through the study of philosophy are versatile and helpful in different areas of my life. I'm continually surprised how many gaps in my knowledge philosophy reveals, which are only opportunities to learn more.
What brought you to coffee?
If I'm honest I wanted to be a barista because I always saw baristas as the coolest people. Then I quickly discovered that coffee brings people together in a unique way. Now, through coffee, I'm connected to new people, both locally and globally, every day.
What is one skill you want to learn?
I want to learn to be a bartender. I'm interested in cocktails and I'd love to learn more about mixology.
Name the best food you’ve ever eaten
A few years ago my sister started a family tradition of eating prime rib on Christmas because she hates turkey. I look forward to my mother's prime rib every year. Even better than the first meal is the prime rib sandwiches the next day. Only a few more weeks until I good home for the holidays.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
I lived in Italy for a year and a half. I'm proud that I was able to live in a foreign country and travel solo. I made some great memories abroad.
Do you have a most embarrassing moment?
While in Italy, I wrecked a moped the first time I rode it. Even though I broke my leg and got some bad road rash my friends never let me live it down. To be honest, it is a pretty funny story.
What novel are you currently reading?
I'm re-reading Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors because his characters are easy to empathize with. "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt" is one of my favorite literary quotes.
I love listening to podcasts. I mostly listen to story-based podcast and, somehow, keep up with 18 podcasts (Yes, that was a brag). I'd love to make a recommendation for you.
Name your biggest fear.
I'm afraid of horses. They're not my biggest fear, but horses are just all muscle. I know that horses are mostly harmless, but my fear is irrational.
What is something we’d be surprised to know about you?
I've been banned from the United Kingdom for since 2011 and I can't return until 2021.
Cat or dog person, why?
My family had dogs when I was younger, but I'm a cat person. I like cats because they're more independent. Dogs can be too clingy and needy.
What was your favorite childhood cartoon?
I watch and rewatched Aladdin as a child. I'm not just talking about the first one. I'm talking about the entire trilogy. The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves were straight to VHS but were just as good as the original. That's an overstatement, but I still love them.
